SEVERE WEATHER DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

Van ISD has a system in place for severe weather in an effort to keep our students safe and our parents informed. We consider the safety of our students and staff a top priority and will always respond to the immediate emergency first. Parents may not receive immediate communication while the district manages the actual emergency. After ensuring the safety of our students and staff, our next priority will be communication with parents.

School officials regularly monitor The National Weather Service and local television and radio stations for any potential storm alerts or risks. Communication to staff is done in advance of approaching storms and conditions are monitored regularly for potential threats to students on field trips outside the Van ISD area. School officials have open lines of communication with the Van Police Department and follow DPS, fire and police recommendations for duck and cover (in-shelter) storm procedures.

Parents are asked not to come to school buildings in the middle of a storm to pick up their children. Please let school officials effectively respond during a weather emergency and tune in to the district communication outlets listed below for updates and important announcements. In the event severe weather is approaching, Van ISD will account for students and staff in a secure location and then communicate updates to parents using the following outlets:

Emergency Notification System (Blackboard): Our mass notification system can call, text, and email the emergency contact numbers (up to six for each student and staff member) simultaneously. Be sure your child's emergency contact information is up to date in your Skyward Family Access Account. To see how to update your contact information, please click here.

District Website & Social Media: When the situation permits, the district will post updates to our Facebook page. Facebook is one of the first forms of communication for Van ISD.
